Northern Michigan Real Estate: Why a Good Realtor is like a Good Surgeon

Why a Good Realtor is like a Good Surgeon

A good realtor is like a good surgeon when both use built in measures to make sure everything goes smoothly in their efforts.

I was surfing the tv channels a few weeks ago and came across Dr. Atul Gawande, surgeon at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston (also a staff writer at the New Yorker) who was a guest on Jon Stewart's The Daily Show. Wasn't paying too much attention until he started to talk about measures that were put in place which resulted in a decrease in hospital deaths and complications.

Everybody knows healthcare (or the lack of it for far too many Americans) is on everyone's minds now, so I thought "wait a minute.  This deserves attention.  Reducing deaths in a hospital?  Simply?  Gotta listen to this."

Well Dr. Gawande has written this book "The Checklist Manifesto" which takes measures often applied in aviation, construction, etc., and found when applied in a hospital setting, things worked better - for all.

The Checklist Manifesto Seemed hard to believe -- and incredulous to me that there weren't already systems in place in hospitals to make sure the wrong foot wasn't operated on, or that standard questions weren't asked before an operation, etc.  But we all have heard about the wrong leg being removed - it does happen.

I thought of Real Estate - and a realtor's job to make sure all things go smoothly, in a timely fashion, to make sure all parties are happy.

In my role as a realtor in  Asheville North Carolina all contracts have to be fully executed, dated, and all pertinent paperwork submitted before it can go "through the channels."  When everything is in place as it should be, the transaction goes smoothly, and my buyers and sellers are happy.  I follow a checklist - steps put in place to insure that everything has been done -- just as the surgeons and other doctors who follow their checklist find there are 35% fewer complications.  Deaths are reduced by as much as 50%.  There are fewer unexpected problems, and often the procedures themselves are completed quicker (which means less anesthesia for the patient).

We should all read this book, and encourage others to as well.

And when it comes to real estate, make sure your realtor is following a checklist too.  I know I am.  Just ask for Dr. Evelyn Zebro - I specialize in Asheville North Carolina - where you'll get good care all the way to closing!

Here's a sample of an interview with Dr. Atul Gawande, author of "The Checklist Manifesto."  You Tube has a much more extensive presentation by Dr. Gawande where he spoke at Dominican University in San Rafael California early 2010 as well.  Please check out if you really want to know more.
